Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 8, 2026 · Replaces all prior Active Defender privacy policies, including the separate website and mobile application policies.
Active Defender is a school safety platform operated by Boyte Group Inc and used by schools and school districts. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you. It applies to our website, our web platform, our mobile applications, and the text message notifications we send on behalf of participating schools.
1. Information we collect
Website visitors
When you submit a form on our website or through a LinkedIn Lead Gen form, we collect your first and last name, work email address, job title, organization or school district name, and anything else you choose to include. We collect only the business contact information needed to respond to your inquiry.
School staff who use the platform
When a school sets up Active Defender, it provides account information for the staff members who will use the system. Depending on how the school configures the platform, this may include name, role, assigned campus or classroom, work contact information, and — where the school has enabled text notifications — a mobile number.
Information a school provides about students
Schools may connect Active Defender to their student information system or provide student information directly, so that staff can account for students during a drill or emergency. This information is provided by the school, remains under the school's control, and is processed by Active Defender only to provide the service to that school.
Visitors checked in at a school
When a school uses Active Check-In, information collected at the front desk — such as name, reason for visit, and the results of any screening the school has enabled — is collected on behalf of and under the direction of that school.
Information collected automatically
Our applications collect technical information needed to operate and troubleshoot the service, including device identifiers, application version and configuration, IP address, and error logs recording the date and time of use.
2. Text message (SMS) information
Active Defender delivers text message notifications to school staff on behalf of participating schools. A participating school provides the mobile numbers of staff members who have agreed with their school to receive these notifications. Active Defender then sends each number a single confirmation request, and no further messages are sent unless the staff member replies YES. We record the mobile number, the date and time of that reply, and delivery records for messages sent.
We do not sell or share mobile information
We do not sell, rent, or share mobile information or SMS consent with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Mobile information is shared only with the telecommunications providers required to deliver a message, and only for that purpose.
Staff may opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message, or by asking their school administrator to remove their number. Full program details are in our SMS Messaging Terms.
3. How we use information
- To provide, operate, and support the Active Defender platform for schools
- To deliver alerts, notifications, and the text messages described above
- To respond to demo requests and inquiries, and to schedule product demonstrations
- To troubleshoot errors, improve reliability, and understand how the service is used
- To maintain business records and meet legal obligations
We do not use information collected through the platform for unrelated marketing purposes.
4. Location information
Location sharing in the Active Defender mobile application is optional and off by default. A user may choose to share device location so that staff and responders can see where help is needed during an incident. Location sharing can be turned off at any time in the application or in your device settings.
5. How we share information
Active Defender does not sell, rent, or trade personal information.
We share information only in these circumstances:
- With your school or district. Information collected through the platform belongs to and is available to the school that operates it.
- With emergency responders, where a school has enabled emergency data sharing and an incident is active.
- With service providers — including cloud hosting, messaging, and communications providers — solely to operate the service on our behalf. These providers are contractually required to safeguard the information and may not use it for any other purpose.
- Where required by law, or to protect the safety of a person.
Student information provided by a school is processed on that school's behalf and under its direction. We do not use student information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
6. Mobile applications
The Active Defender mobile applications are provided to school staff at no cost. Accounts may be created by a school administrator, and a school may issue credentials that are not tied to an individual's personal information.
If you choose to receive push notifications, our applications use a third-party notification service that may collect information used to identify your device. Location sharing is optional, as described in section 4.
7. Data security
We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information in our systems, databases, and networks from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access. Access to submitted data is limited to authorized personnel with a legitimate business purpose. No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Retention
We retain information for as long as necessary to provide the service, maintain appropriate business records, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, and comply with applicable legal obligations. Schools may request deletion of their data, and individuals may request removal of their contact information, by contacting us.
9. Your choices
- Unsubscribe from email using the link in any message we send
- Reply STOP to any text message to stop receiving text notifications
- Turn off location sharing in the application or your device settings
- Contact us to request removal of your information
10. Children's and student privacy
The Active Defender applications are intended for use by school staff, not by students, and we do not knowingly permit children to create accounts.
Where a school provides student information to Active Defender so that staff can account for students during a drill or emergency, that information is processed only on the school's behalf and under its direction, for the purpose the school has designated. If you are a parent or guardian with questions about student information held by your child's school, please contact the school directly.
11. Users outside the United States
Our services are provided, supported, and hosted in the United States and are governed by United States law. If you use the service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised effective date.
